The Volkswagen Beetle debuted in Australia back in 1953, and the cars were assembled here the following year.
The original Volkswagen engine, featuring a modest displacement of 1,131 cc was ramped up to 1,192 cc for 1954. As a result, power climbed from 30 hp (22 kW; 30 PS) to 36 hp (27 kW; 36 PS) and compression ratios were pushed up as well as the octane ratings of available fuel went up during the 1950s and 1960s.
But none of those cars was anything at all like this fantastic take on the venerable Beetle commissioned by Tim Bockhold, a VW enthusiast from southern California.
Mendeola Signature Motors in San Diego began the project, and it was eventually fitted with a massive turbocharged 2.3-litre engine. A major boost over the original 1.6-litre flat-four the car once had, the finished product features a custom exhaust system and bespoke aluminum wheels.
As of now, while the bodywork appears standard, custom chrome trim on every surface, embossed seats, a custom-designed steering wheel and bespoke gauges have changed the game entirely.
Enormous disc brakes with drilled rotors and matched calipers, modified VW Rabbit tie-rods and a standard rack and pinion system from a Rabbit handle the braking and steering duties. This beauty also includes adjustable shocks and springs and fully adjustable camber and caster adjustments to set off the suspension.
Anibal Chico at Chico Performance built the magnesium 2332cc motor to drive this artful Beetle to astonishing speeds and performance stats.
And if you happen to have some spare funds available, this lovely custom can be yours – for just $103,000 AUD.
